As New Zealand’s primary marine search and rescue organisation, Coastguard Tautiaki Moana, is dedicated to saving lives on the water. With over 2 million Kiwis engaging in various water activities, their role has never been more critical. To better educate, connect, and support the communities they serve, Coastguard required a modern, centralised digital platform that would strengthen their brand and improve their ability to track, report, and engage with users.
The Challenge
Coastguard’s existing digital presence was fragmented across multiple older websites, making it difficult to provide a cohesive user experience. The organisation needed a single, unified platform that would:
- Simplify and enhance user journeys for members, volunteers, and the general public.
- Improve access to safety tools, education, and membership services.
- Centralise data and streamline reporting to better track engagement and impact.
- Future-proof Coastguard’s operations with a scalable, adaptable website.
The Solution
A purpose-built, customer-centric website was developed, integrating multiple legacy platforms into a single, seamless experience. The new digital presence ensures that boaties of all types - whether it kayaks, jet skis, waka ama, or yachts - can easily access the resources they need to stay safe on the water.
Key features of the new platform include:
- A streamlined, intuitive user experience, ensuring critical safety information is accessible when it’s needed most.
- A centralised membership and volunteer portal, making it easier for Coastguard to engage with and support its community.
- Integrated education and training resources, reinforcing Coastguard’s commitment to water safety and knowledge-sharing.
- Future-ready architecture, allowing for ongoing expansion and adaptation as Coastguard continues to evolve.
The Results
The launch of the new website marks the first phase of a four-part digital transformation, setting the foundation for a stronger, more connected Coastguard. The platform now serves as a central hub for information, engagement, and safety resources, helping Coastguard reach more people, educate more boaties, and ultimately, save more lives across Aotearoa.
With the next phases now in development, this project is more than just a website - it’s a digital transformation that empowers Coastguard to continue its lifesaving mahi long into the future.
