SPECTRUM Street Art Festival: Why It’s Worth Going

If you’re in Christchurch, you may have noticed that a new series of walls across the city centre are currently being painted by a bunch of talented artists. But ‘Big Walls’ are only part of what the SPECTRUM Street Art Festival has to offer.

On Saturday 12th December 2015, SPECTRUM Street Art Festival opens its doors again at the YMCA Christchurch (Hereford Street). Publica is a primary partner of SPECTRUM, providing all of the branding and creative work for promoting the event and helping people explore SPECTRUM. We also built the Street Wise app that enables people to navigate their way around the Big Wall artworks throughout Christchurch.

We’re big fans of SPECTRUM, so we thought we’d put together a list of why you MUST go and see the exhibition.

It’s free.

SPECTRUM is open 7 days a week from 12 December through to 17 April 2016. And it’s FREE for everyone! The perfect family outing, date night idea, adventure with your kids, or way to impress your out of town friends and family. Note: Donations are welcome.

It’s the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest street art event.

Oi YOU! and YMCA Christchurch produce the Southern Hemisphere’s largest street art festivals, right here in Christchurch. And every year it gets bigger and better.

You’ll see works from 15 of the world’s most renowned street artists.

Following on from last year’s event, Christchurch will again be treated to an international line up with more countries represented than ever before, as well as an array of New Zealand’s finest. This year sees 15 of the world’s best street artists transform 7 exhibition spaces at the YMCA and 10 Big Walls around the city into awesome works of art.

There’s something for everyone.

SPECTRUM encapsulates every tint and tone of the street art form and explores the myriad of ways that street artists get their work seen. The YMCA’s huge building on Hereford Street holds 7 different exhibition spaces for visitors to explore street art from every possible angle – there’s everything from a Kiwi rainforest to an urban jungle, and simple letter forms to a global artistic explosion.

SPECTRUM is open 7 days, until 17th April 2016.
Saturday – Wednesday: 9:30am – 5:30pm
Thursday – Friday: 9:30am – 8pm

To find all the Big Walls around Christchurch, download the Street Wise walking tour app! Available for both Android and iOs.
