In celebration of International Women’s Day, we chatted with our inspiring female co-founder, Michelle, to delve into her journey and experiences as a woman in business.
What inspired you to start Publica?
I’ve always aspired to launch and run my own business. The prospect of creating something entirely new and uniquely my own has always inspired and motivated me. In 2008, I was fortunate to be introduced to the world of agency work, where I discovered a passion for delivering meaningful work to the Ōtautahi community. It reinforced my belief that entrepreneurship could be a powerful force for positive change and served as a catalyst for the launch of Publica.
What have been some of the biggest challenges in building Publica over the past decade?
Staying ahead of the curve in the ever-changing digital landscape is definitely the first one that comes to mind. The industry is constantly evolving, so we have to be agile and adaptable to stay relevant and competitive. As Publica has grown, we’ve had to find ways to scale our operations without compromising on quality or customer service. This has involved hiring the right people, developing efficient processes and staying true to our values and vision along the way.
What advice would you give to people who are interested in pursuing entrepreneurship?
Find something you’re passionate about and research the industry thoroughly. Seek support from other entrepreneurs and industry professionals through networking and mentorship programs. Embrace failure as an opportunity for growth, make adjustments and stay committed to your vision, even during difficult times. Remember that building a business takes time, effort and patience, but with determination and hard work, you can create something you’re really proud of.
Tell us about the culture you’ve created at Publica, and how you’ve fostered diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
At Publica, we try to prioritise open and honest communication, regularly seek feedback and provide equal opportunities for growth and development to all of our team members. We actively seek out and hire a diverse range of individuals and are committed to fostering a workplace that reflects these principles. Our culture of inclusivity and respect is fundamental, and we recognise that diversity is key to unlocking innovation and driving success. By providing resources and support to our employees, regardless of their gender or background, we create an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute to our collective success.
How do you balance being a co-founder with your personal life and other interests outside of work?
I take my work responsibilities seriously, but understand how important it is to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I make a conscious effort to set boundaries between work and personal time and prioritise my tasks accordingly. Each week, I take an hour or so to pencil in time for my personal interests and hobbies. Being intentional about preserving my personal time like this helps me recharge and enjoy life outside of Publica.
Can you talk about the importance of mentorship and support networks for women in leadership, and how you’ve personally benefited from them?
I think mentorship and support networks are essential for women in leadership positions. They provide a valuable perspective and can help women realise they are not alone in their experiences. I’m fortunate to have a strong support system of both women and men, who have been just as supportive as my female counterparts. My husband, who is also my business partner, and each person at Publica has provided guidance and encouragement that has been crucial in helping me navigate the challenges of leadership and grow both personally and professionally.
What message would you like to share with women around the world on International Women’s Day?
Keep showing up. Don’t be afraid to take risks and pursue your dreams, even if it means stepping outside of your comfort zone.
Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Building a strong community of peers, mentors and advocates can provide invaluable guidance and advice when you need it most.
Stay current in the market and have a growth mindset. The business landscape is always changing, so it’s important to stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies. Take advantage of industry events, networking opportunities and online resources to expand your knowledge and keep your skills sharp.
Lastly, find your voice and assert yourself confidently. As a woman in business, it can be easy to feel overlooked. Remember that your perspectives and experiences are unique and valuable.
